The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) is seeking Egyptian backing for the inclusion of armwrestling in the 2027 African Games in Cairo, while pursuing a broader partnership to strengthen the sport across Africa.
GAF President and Africa Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, led a delegation to meet Egypt’s Ambassador to Ghana, Wael Fathy Ahmed, at the Egyptian Embassy in Accra.
Armwrestling was first introduced at the African Games during Accra 2023, where Ghana produced a historic haul of 40 medals, demonstrating the sport’s potential to boost a host nation’s medal prospects.
Ambassador Fathy commended Ghana’s achievements and called for stronger Ghana-Egypt cooperation in athlete development, technical exchanges, sports business and tourism.
“Ghana and Egypt have a long and historic relationship, and we should continue to look for new areas where our two countries can work together. Sport provides an excellent platform for bringing our people, especially our young people, closer together,” he said.
Mr Asibey described Egypt as a strategic partner, saying: “Our objective is to build a partnership that goes beyond the table to technical development, athlete exchanges, business, tourism and sports diplomacy.”
He said Ghana was ready to support a successful Cairo 2027, adding: “We want Ghana and Egypt to work together to make Cairo 2027 a success and to ensure that Armwrestling becomes a permanent and valuable part of the African Games movement.”
The proposed cooperation includes training camps, coaching programmes, athlete and technical exchanges, competitions, sponsorship, sports marketing and sports tourism.
