GEODRILL offers $10,000 for gold at 2018 Commonwealth Games

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GEODRILL Ghana Limited, Dave Harper, has promised to offer Ghanaian athletes who win gold at next year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia a $10,000 prize.

Ghana has won a total of 57 medals since the inception of the Games in 1930, 15 out of which have been gold, with the last being the golds which were won by Ignisious Gaisah and Majeti Fetrie at the Melbourne Games in 2006.

Mr Harper made the pledge during a presentation ceremony by the Australian High Commission to the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) in Accra and expressed the hope that his $10,000 reward will motivate athletes who represent Ghana to give of their best at the 2018 Commonwealth Games scheduled between April 4 to14, 2018.

“Ghana has fallen short of winning a gold medal.  Over the years, there has only been a handful of their champions who have been able to get the gold.

“I think that in order for us to get this to work, I will like to offer an incentive and the incentive is, any athlete that comes back from the Gold Coast with a gold medal will get $10,000. That is the pledge of GEODRILL, not silver, not bronze, I need the gold. Let's go to the Gold Coast and bring back gold like Azumah did in 1978 in Edmonton,” the GEODRILL CEO said when he accompanied the Australian High Commissioner, Andrew Barnes to the GOC offices to make the presentation last Monday.

Mr Harper explained that in the event of a team winning a gold medal, members of the team will share the $10,000 prize.

Meanwhile, the Chef de Mission of Ghana's 2018 Commonwealth Games bid, Mohammed Sahnoon, has disclosed that his outfit has written to the various national sports federations seeking correspondence on which athletes they would present for the games.
