On Monday, August 7, the 21-year-old striker was dismissed for deliberately standing on the back of Nigeria defender Alozie with just three minutes of normal time remaining in Brisbane.

James was sent off the pitch by referee Melissa Borjas after VAR (monitor) confirmed the incident.

10-woman England survived James’s dismissal as well as the Nigeria scare to advance to the quarter-finals after winning 4-2 on penalties after the game had ended goalless in extra time.

In response to a tweet from Alozie on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, James said: “All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened.”

“Also, for our England fans and my team-mates, playing with and for you is my greatest honour and I Promise to learn from my experience,” the tweet read further.

Alozie, 26, tweeted in defence of James following the backlash from social media enthusiasts since the incident happened.

She posted: Abeg, rest. We are playing on the world stage. This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James.”

James will miss Saturday’s quarter-final match against Colombia in Sydney due to an automatic one-match ban.
