Chief Imam directs nationwide prayers for Black Stars ahead of Panama clash

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has directed Imams across the country, particularly Regional and District Imams, to lead prayers for the Black Stars ahead of Ghana's opening match against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A statement issued by the Office of the National Chief Imam on June 15, 2026, said the directive forms part of efforts to seek divine support for the national team as Ghana begins its fifth FIFA World Cup campaign.

The statement said the Chief Imam had extended his goodwill, solidarity and prayers to the Black Stars, asking Allah to grant the players, technical team and management guidance, strength, wisdom, unity, discipline and resilience throughout the tournament.

It added that prayers were also being offered for the team's safety, protection from injury and the strength to represent the country with dignity and honour.

According to the statement, the directive fulfils a pledge made during a recent visit by officials of the Ghana Football Association to the National Chief Imam.

The statement said special prayers would be offered for Ghana's opening match against Panama and for a successful World Cup campaign.

It said the National Chief Imam viewed the Black Stars as representatives of the collective hopes and pride of Ghanaians and described the team's participation on the world stage as a symbol of national unity that rises above political, ethnic and religious differences.

The statement therefore called on all Ghanaians to support the team through encouragement, goodwill and prayers as the Black Stars seek success at the tournament.

The statement was signed by the Executive Secretary at the Office of the National Chief Imam, Alhaji Osumanu Seidu.

Ghana will begin its Group L campaign against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on June 17, 2026.

The Black Stars will then face England and Croatia in their remaining group matches.
