The National Chess Champion, Francis Anquandah, maintained his dominance when he emerged winner of the President’s Cup Chess tournament held at the Media Centre of the Accra Sports Stadium.
Though keenly contested, his six points accrued were enough to hand him the title ahead of Ivorian champion,Simplice Degondo, and top Ghanaian player, Kojo Hasford, who both acrued 5.5 points.
Similarly, the ladies category also witnessed keen competition among the eventual winner, Angela Ayiku, Madam Christiana Ashley, who closely followed her, Oforiwaa and Dorcas Allotey in that order.
The third edition of the competition also saw Joel Klo, a fresh graduate of Achimota Junior High School, pick the award for the U-16 contest in the which attracted participants from Togo and Cote d'Ivoire.
The President of Ghana Chess Association (GCA), Group Capt. George Arko-Dadzie, explained that the competition was initiated to revive the sport and unearth talents to compete for the national championship later in the year.
It was sponsored by Reiss and Co Gh Ltd, whose managing director, Peter Vand der Wurff, encouraged GCA to continue researching into the game, which is going through a lot of advancement.
He praised the participants and expressed delight to be part of the competition, promising to continue the company’s support for the game, which offers enomous benefits such as helping to fight the Alzheimer disease.
