One-time Ghana youth golf champion, Nicolo Catto, captured the headlines last Saturday as winner of the men’s Group A in a special competition played at the Tema Country Golf Club in honour of Vice Admiral Mathew Quarshie on his elevation as the Chief of the Defence Staff.
Catto, a former pupil of Lincoln Community School at Abelenkpe, stunned his older competitors by recording an impressive net score of 67 to beat Alex Fiagome by two strokes.
Catto’s recent international tour of Italy, where he played in a number of senior competitions appeared to have paid off as he swung well from tee off to hole 18, pushing Rev. E. K. Amezabo to the third position.
Adelaide Owusu-Agyepong also shared the spotlight after winning the main ladies event with ease. She recorded a net score of 69 to beat Aku Yaba and Margaret Oppong who scored 73 net and 74 net respectively.
James Otoo won the men’s Group B with 70 net score and was followed by Richard Boateng (73 net) and Felix Owusu-Agyepong (73 net), a former Majority Leader in Parliament. Boateng took the second spot on countback.
Hellen Appah clinched the top prize in the ladies Group B competition which became a hot contest between the retired nurse and Cherie Hammond. Hellen scored 70 net, while Cherie returned a net score of 73.
Vice Admiral Quarshie, a golfer with many years experience, shared some insights with colleague golfers and invited guests from the corporate world in an attempt to bridge the gap between the military and civilian golfers.
The competition was sponsored by Zipnet, an Internet provider.
