Boxing: Richard Commey ready for Luna showdown

Ghana’s world title hopeful, Richard Oblitey Commey, is ready to face undefeated American Alejandro Luna at the Freeman Coliseum, San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday.

“Everything is set and we’re looking forward to the fight; training has been great”, Commey’s trainer, Carl Lokko, told the Graphic Sports in an interview from his United States base last Monday.

Commey, 30, last fought and defeated Tunisian Hedi Slimani in Accra following two successive losses in his quest to win the IBF lightweight title.
The Ghanaian has a record of 25 wins and comes up against a younger opponent in Luna who is yet to taste defeat, but Lokko believes experience would be to his boxer’s benefit.

“Commey has fought more than him (Luna) and he is a more experienced fighter. He is here to prove a point and I believe he would do exactly that,” he stated.

According to Lokko, Commey’s training regimen has been perfect and he seeks to win this bout to catapult him to another world title fight in the lightweight division for the third time.

Luna, 26, is undefeated in 22 fights and the James Town brawler will be his toughest challenge yet after making light work of Russian hard-hitter, Andrey Klimov.

On Saturday, Luna will face a ‘wounded lion’ after a narrow and controversial loss to Robert Easter Jr 14 months ago and another painful defeat to Russian Denis Shafikov.
