Bach elected new IOC boss

Thomas Bach has replaced Jacques Rogge as the new International Olympic Committee president after a vote in Buenos Aires.

The 59-year-old was the favourite to take over from Rogge — who has stood down after 12 years in the position — of the six candidates. Bach received an overwhelming majority of the second round of votes from the IOC members.

Bach, a fencing gold medallist for Germany in the 1976 Games in Montreal, is set to begin eight years as president, with an option of a second four-year stint afterwards.

Bach becomes the ninth man to take up the role as president. He was accused of cheating during his fencing career after allegations were made about him using water on his gloves to disable the electric monitoring system.

"I'd like to thank all my dear friends and colleagues who voted for me," Bach said.

"This is an overwhelming sign of trust and confidence. I know of the great responsibility of being IOC president. This makes me humble. I want to lead according to my motto: 'unity in diversity'. This means I will do my very best to balance all the different interests of stakeholders of the Olympic movement."
