Ashantigold: CK Akonnor gets pay raise

The new owners of Ashantigold Sporting Club have refuted claims that they rejected a request for salary increment by head coach, Charles Kwabla Akonnor.

Last Wednesday, media reports indicated that the management of Ashantigold turned down a request to increase Akonnor’s salary.

However, in a sharp rebuttal, Dr Kwaku Frimpong, president of the club, told the Graphic Sports yesterday that the reports were fussy and untrue.

“It’s never true that we rejected his request. He put his request before us, so we negotiated and arrived at a conclusion. I cannot put his salary in the public domain but I can tell you that we are done with the negotiations and everyone is satisfied,” he said.

When the Graphic Sports contacted Akonnor, he was non-commital about the issue.

Akunnor joined the Miners last November from Dreams FC and guided the club to escape relegation after which he was confirmed as the head coach. He signed a two-year contract with the miners last December

Ashantigold last won the Ghana Premier League during the 2014/2015 season but battled relegation in previous seasons, forcing the mining company to offload the ownership of the club to the new managers.

The new investors are seeking to rebuild the brand of the club and they have started restructuring the club’s panels, including the appointment of a new Technical Director, John Christensen, who arrived in the country last Friday.
