Ghana's Benjamin Azamati has been tipped for success at major world championships by former two-time 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell.

Azamati, the country's fastest man and a former University of Ghana student, has broken the national 100m record twice, most recently achieving a time of 9.90s at the Texas Relays.

Speaking to Graphic Sports on the sidelines of the Max Velocity Speed Summit last Wednesday in Accra, Powell praised Azamati's ability and predicted he could win a medal on the world stage, noting that running sub 10 seconds was a clear indicator of his potential.

Despite not having met Azamati personally, Powell said he was aware of the sprinter's talent and believed he could go far with the right coaching and attitude.

“I don’t know Azamati personally, but I know of him,” Powell said.

“He’s very talented and you can see that for yourself. I’m sure he was running when he was in Ghana, but he wasn’t getting to that level and then he left to the USA. All of a sudden, he’s running fast.

"So you can imagine [what will happen] if you had the same coaching and attitude here in Ghana, you would be making lots of stars,” he said. Once you’re running sub 10, you are ready to win a medal."
