Archery Association gets busy

The new sports association in country, the Ghana Archery Association (GAA) has stepped up its efforts to popularise the sport in the country.

As part of its effort, the AAG with the support of the World Archery Federation, has held a five-day training programme for people who are now learning the sport.

Archery is a target shooting sport which involves bow and arrow and is an Olympic sport.

The five-day programme, held at the Regional Maritime University (RMU) at Nungua, took participants through the basic rudiments of target archery and also how to manufacture shooting arrows and other equipment from local materials such as bamboo, wood and cardboard.

Dr Michelle Afrifah, the vice President of the AAG, told the Daily Graphic that training was one of the few short term steps the association was undertaking to make the sport more popular within the shortest possible time.

"Archery is an old sport but unfortunately in Ghana, it's a budding sport compared to neighbours Cote d'Ivoire and Benin. We want to popularise it by training coaches and reaching out to the schools.

Dr Afrifah, the first known archer from Ghana, said the target was to make the sport popular for both leisure and on competitive basis, where they target an Olympic appearance in the future.
