African Games LOC boss hails cycling revival

The Executive Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 2023 African Games, Dr Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, has praised the Ghana Cycling Association (GCA) for reviving the sport ahead of the Games.

He also commended the technical department of the association for organising successive competitions across the country over the past couple of months.
"Cycling is on the ascendancy and we must all enjoy it and support it," he noted.

He made these remarks on the sidelines of the Osagyefo Criterium staged last Wednesday around the Accra Stadium.

Dr Ofosu-Asare believed that cycling could give Ghana a medal at the upcoming Games and therefore pledged his outfit's support for the sport.

"With the enthusiasm and excitement I have observed among these national cyclists, with a little support, we can get a medal at the Games next year," he said.

He singled out the technical director of the GCA, Shaaban Mohammed, for his efforts at realising the growth and development of cycling in the country.

In a separate interview, Mr Shaaban Mohammed disclosed to Graphic Sports that the Transponder Timing System, a  pro-chip software tracking system which accurately calculates the time and winner of a road race, was used for the first time in the Osagyefo Criterium.

He said the procurement of the device by the Gladiators Cycling Club is a game-changer for Ghana Cycling.

"We can now know who exactly came first during a photo-finish and the correct times of cyclists during a race," he explained.

He appealed to the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, and other stakeholders to get involved in the activities of the least-financed disciplines in order to attract more sponsorship.
