The Minister for Sport, Mr Mahama Ayariga, has denied reports that the Ministry facilitated the transportation of hundreds of football fans to Equatorial Guinea to support Ghana in the ongoing AFCON 2015 competition.
Speaking to Accra-based Starr FM via phone on the well-being Ghanaian supporters who came under attack from Equatorial Guinea supporters in Thursday’s semi-final clash, Mr Ayariga said he was not involved in the transportation of the fans.
He said: “I’m not working on those issues. I’ve been here all this while. Generally I’m managing the safety of all fans who were in the stadium and once they all disperse and get to their various destinations, I’m sure those who handled their transportation here will deal with that.”
Pressed further by Kafui Dey, host of the programme on which he spoke, Mr Ayariga: “The Sports Ministry is not at all involved in that and I don’t think that is an issue that you want me to spend time on this morning when I’m struggling to make sure that everything is sorted out and everybody continues to be safe.”
News that the government transported fans to Equatorial Guinea has been criticised by some Ghanaians who argue that spending already scare money that way is a case of misplaced priority.
