Andre Dede Ayew and Marseille’s dream of playing in Europe next season is all but over after being held to a 1-1 draw by Bordeaux in the Ligue 1 over the weekend.
The result keeps Marseille at sixth place which keeps them at risk of missing even the Europa boat.
Marseille, have been consistent in the Champions League over the past three seasons, and were eliminated at the final group stage in this year’s competition.
WIth PSG and Monaco dominating the Ligue 1, Marseille, who started off poorly had hoped to save their season with a Europa ticket but that is also eluding them and they will have to finish at least in the fifth place to secure their spot.
That will be disappointing for Dede Ayew, who has endeared himself to the Marseille fans with his performance.
Ayew, likely to be named in Ghana’s provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup to be released today, was sidelined for almost two months following an injury last November, but he returned not to first team game, but also to his sterling performance which saw him score some decisive goals for the former champions.
Marseille had their hopes raised when Benoit Cheyrou had put them in front after a little over half an hour meant they were on course to nip into fifth place.
However, Cheick Diabate's second-half equaliser for Bordeaux denied them a win and rather left them trailing to Lyon who were beaten 0-1 by Lorient.
