Kotoko for Spain…May pull out of Top 4

General Manager of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Samuel Opoku Nti, has confirmed that the reigning Premier League and FA Cup champions could pull out of this year’s Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Top 4 tournament which would be launched on Wednesday.

Opoku Nti told the Graphic Sports after the FA Cup Awards last Saturday night that the Ghanaian champions’ participation hinged on the outcome of visa applications for players and officials of the club at the Spanish Embassy for a scheduled pre-season camp in Spain.

He said: “As things stand now, we are not 100 percent certain whether we will be involved in the tournament but by Wednesday if we are able to secure our Spanish visas we will have no choice but to withdraw”.

The GHALCA Top 4 which will feature Kotoko, Kpando Heart of Lions, Accra Hearts of Oak and Ashgold, will be making a return after two years and is scheduled to run between August 20 and September 10.

Opoku Nti also stressed that Kotoko were working hard in the transfer market to replace strikers Seidu Bancey and Abdul Aziz Yusif, who recently left the club for Egyptian side, FC Smouha.

“At the moment we have sold only two key players; Bancey and Aziz, but Michael Akuffo is still a Kotoko player because his move to Libya has fallen through because of the political turmoil in that country.

“I want to assure our fans that we will replace these players with equally good if not better ones,” he stressed.
