Accra Hearts and Kpando Heart of Lions find themselves in a dilemma as far as their participation in CAF competitions next year are concerned following a decision by the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) to slash Ghana's slots from four to two due to poor performance.
CAF last week reduced the nation’s representation for both the Confederation Cup and the CAF Champions League from four to two and was confirmed by the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi, at a media briefing last Thursday.
He explained that Ghana's poor performance at the two competitions over the years resulted in the latest CAF decision.
But before then the GFA had written to Kotoko, Lions, Hearts and Ashantigold as Ghana’s representatives for Africa next year.
With the new development, Hearts and Lions are in a fix as they wait for the GFA to decide their fate.
Ashantigold got the nod to participate in the Confederation Cup by virture of their semi-final placing in last season’s MTN FA Cup competition after losing finalists Inter Allies had withdrawn.
Kotoko and Hearts carried the flag of Ghana high in the continental club competitions but the opposite seems to be the situation now.
Ghana's best in recent years have been Berekum Chelsea's performance in 2012 when they were eliminated at the group stage. All other clubs were kicked out in the first round.
The latest move is seen as a stab in the back for Ghana football after a similar action was taken three years ago until last year when CAF restored the slots.
