Former Black Satellites striker, Ebenezer Assifuah, and track and field star John O’Brien lead the nominations for the fourth edition of the Stellar Logistics Western Region Sports Awards fixed for the Best Western Atlantic Plus Hotel in Takoradi on October 31 at 7p.m.
Assifuah and O’Brien have two nominations each ahead of the event which will recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions of individuals and organisations in the Western Region.
Surprisingly, Kumasi Asante Kotoko defender, Abeiku Ainooson, who scooped the Footballer of the Year and Sports Personality of the year, was missing from the nominations released by the organisers, West Prime Communications Limited (WPCL).
FC Sion forward Assifuah and O’Brien, a former student of the Takoradi Technical Institute and national badminton star, Abraham Ayittey, will battle for the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year award, while Assifuah will hope to bag his second gong in the Male Footballer of the Year category where he must fend off stiff competition from Samuel Afful (Hasaacas) and Muntari Tagoe (Medeama SC).
O’Brien will also contest for the Athlete of the Year with Emmanuel Bondzie, a student of the Atuabo Presby, Tarkwa JHS and Joycelyn Assafuah, a former student of the Methodist SHS in Sekondi.
Another keenly-contested category is the CEO/Chairman of the Year where Nana Banyin Eyison (Hasaacas Ladies and Sekondi Hasaacas), Moses Armah Parker (Medeama Sporting Club) and Albert Kwame Sampong (Samin F/C), will scramble for honours.
The Coach of the Year will be a fight among Black Queens coach, Yusif Basigi, regional taekwondo coach, Prince Martin Oppan, Regional Badminton team trainer, J.E. Wilson and former Medeama Sporting Club coach, Evans Adotey.
Former national goalie, George Owu of Sekondi Hasaacas, will also receive a special award in recognition of his dedication and valour, while the regional taekwondo team, regional badminton team, Hasaacas Ladies and Medeama SC comprise the Team of the Year category.
Mcdonald Som, Corporate Affairs Manager of WPCL listed the donors as Raybow Hotel, Voltic Ghana Limited, First Choice Engineering, Tumann Enterprise, Nsawam Foam, Palisade Global, Sixjays Ghana and Jeduhem Ventures.
