Ghanaian international stars seem to have quickly recovered from their midweek international slip as they returned to action for their clubs over the weekend.
The Stars were beaten 0-1 by Montenegro in their international friendly last Wednesday, but that loss did very little to affect their psyche as they reported for club duties. The misery, however, continued for some Stars’ players though.
Sulley Muntari and AC Milan’s troubles were compounded as they were beaten 1-0 by Udinese, while Andre Dede Ayew’s hope of playing in next year’s Champions League was dealt a heavy jolt with a 0-1 loss to Nice in their local derby last Saturday.
Antonio Di Natale compounded Milan's woes to earn Udinese a crucial win at the Stadio Friuli in Serie A to move the hosts further from the relegation zone.
Kwadwo Asamoah, and Abdul-Majeed Waris both scored for their clubs while Atsu set up the winner for his Dutch side, Vitesse.
Asamoah scored the only goal in the Juventus’ 1-0 win against Fiorentina yesterday while Atsu’s effort in the 26th minute ensured Vitesse breathed live into their title ambitions when he set up Japanese international Mike Havenaar to score the match-winner at the Rat Verlegh Stadion.
Waris continues his fine and unstoppable form as he helped Valencciennes to boost their survival chances in the French Ligue 1 with a 2-1 win over fellow strugglers, Rennes.
Waris scored the winner for Valenciennes to turn the game when the result stood at 1-1.
Ola Toivoven had given Rennes the lead which was cancelled by Mathieu Dossevi with a Waris assistance and with the game heading for a drawn result, Waris followed up on his earlier penalty shot which was saved by the goalkeeper.
The win leaves Valenciennes on 25 points and still in the third relegation place, five points behind Evian and six adrift of their opponents — who had Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik sent off for conceding the penalty for the winning goal.
Despite the win, the young Ghanaian star is concerned about helping the team avoid relegation.
“Scoring is a good feeling but I feel more comfortable knowing that I can score more goals to help the team avoid relegation.”
