Ghanaian-born British champ Joshua Buatsi plans to fight in Accra

Ghanaian-born British boxer, Joshua Buatsi, says it will be a dream come true to fight in front of his home crowd as he looks forward to hosting one of his championship bouts in Accra.

Buatsi, who holds the World Boxing Association (WBA) International light-heavyweight title, believes that staging a bout in Ghana will offer him the opportunity to market himself to his country of birth.

The 28-year-old United Kingdom-based boxer is currently on vacation in Ghana following his explosive 11th round knockout win over Ricards Bolotniks last month.

In a chat with Graphic Sports, the 2016 Olympic bronze medallist said he still held Ghana in high esteem despite having a dual citizenship which enabled him to compete as a British.

“It has always been a dream for me to fight in Ghana and I’m really looking at that in the future.

“I can’t wait to achieve that and I believe a championship bout in front of a Ghanaian crowd would be a massive endorsement from the country,” Buatsi said.

Talking about Ghana boxing, Buatsi hailed the former world champions for lifting the flag of Ghana high and called on the state to invest more in infrastructure to help grow the sport.

The undefeated hard-hitting puncher noted that Ghana had the potential of producing more world champions, if the state could invest more in the sport.

“Ghanaian fighters continue to prove their talent in boxing whenever they get the chance and I believe the former world champions have paved the way.

“What I think is left now is for the state to consider investing more in the sport to help produce more world champions in the future,” he noted.
