Box Office boss warns Ghanaian boxers against Tanzanians

Boxing promoter and manager Alex Ntiamoah Boakye, has warned Ghanaian boxers to be wary of Tanzanian boxers because they are good fighters with grit in the ring.

He also admonished local boxers to train to their optimum best before facing pugilists from that country and always be prepared to fight a monster in the ring.

“Tanzanian guys are good and they appear less-fancied so we must watch out for them anywhere we find them,” he told Graphic Sports in an exclusive telephone conversation in Accra last Wednesday.

Reacting to the recent shocking defeat to a Tanzanian boxer by Ghana's Jesse Manyo Plange, Mr Boakye believed that although Plange suffered from ring rust after his two-year absence from the ring, his opponent was also a capable boxer.

“I believe it's about inactivity, he needs to be kept busy but with less risky fighters to be able to get into his groove for bigger fights,” he stated.

Plange 34, 21-1-1 (17 KOs), who is now based in the US, trekked to Tanzania on November 4 to face off with Tanzanian journeyman, Fadhili Majiha. He suffered his first loss of his professional career after coming under a barrage of attacks from Majiha, 29, (29-14-4, 14 KOs) in a bantamweight title fight at the Super Dome Arena in Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania.

The unanimous decision chalked up by Majiha surprised many, according to reports, he is one boxer who collapses when he faces a stiff challenge.

However, Mr Boakye, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Box Office Promotions, advised Plange to get into the ring sooner than later and dust off his ring rust.

“He needs to get back into the ring soon but with an opponent with a fair record, not a journeyman, to dust off his ring rust,” he stated.

He admonished Plange, a 2008 Olympian, not to quit the sport but use the opportunity of staying in America to enhance his boxing prowess.
