Last Friday’s election was the third time the assembly had been convened to elect a presiding member for the assembly since the two previous elections had to be suspended due to certain issues.

In the first instance, the election had to be suspended because of a purported fraudulent letter written by the NDC Agona East Constituency Secretary, Mr Samuel Oscar Mensah, dated April 24, 2013, that nominated two people— Benjamin Arthur and Albert Addo—to replace Francis Baidoo and Nana Obiriboa Krampah, Mankrado of Agona Mensakrom, who had resigned their positions. At the meeting, the said letter was read to the assembly members who agreed and referred the matter to the Public Relations and Complaints Committee for investigations.

The second meeting was also suspended due to a letter written by the Agona Nsaba Traditional council and signed for the acting President Nana Oteng Kwabeng, Akyeamehene, dated May 20, 2013, that rejected Mr Ziggah’s quest to seek for re-election.

According to the letter, Mr Ziggah failed to meet with the chiefs to discuss any development issues since he assumed office and that the council had no confidence in him and prayed the electoral officer to use his office to stop him (Mr Ziggah) from seeking re-election.

The contents of the letter were made known to the assembly at the meeting and the presiding member assured the gathering that he and the DCE would meet the council to resolve the impasse.

Mr Ziggah, who is also the assembly member for Agona Ninta Ofoase Electoral Area, stood unopposed, with 26 people voting YES and only one person voting NO in an election conducted by the electoral commission and supervised by the district electoral officer, Mr Forson Annobil.

He was later sworn in by the Magistrate of the Agona Swedru Magistrate Court, His Worship Kweku Baah Frempong.
