Municipal Chief Executive for Ejisu-Juabeng, Yamoah Ponkoh

Police nab NPP parliamentary aspirant for assaulting MCE

The hopes of a 40-year-old businessman at Ejisu in the Ejisu-Juabeng Municipality of the Ashanti Region of being vetted to contest the Ejisu constituency parliamentary seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was nearly dashed last week Wednesday when he was granted police inquiry bail only minutes to the start of the constituency vetting.

Eric Badu Antwi-Boitey (also Known Kaakyire Badu) was arrested last Tuesday by the Ejisu police alongside an alleged accomplice, 45 year-old goldsmith, Kwame Amoako, for allegedly physically assaulting the Municipal Chief Executive for Ejisu-Juabeng, Yamoah Ponkoh during the May 2 National Sanitation Day exercise without any provocation.

The Ejisu District Police Commander, La Baman, told Graphiconline that Kaakyire Badu also verbally attacked and impeded the work of municipal engineers on site for no apparent reason.

The man was reported to have told the Police Commander he was acting ‘as a good citizen to safeguard the sanctity of the municipality.’

Commander Baman said he personally invited the parliamentary aspirant to find out what might have warranted his action but he turned it down.

“He was spotted on Tuesday, May 5, at the market area and arrested and later, his accomplice was picked up,” the commander said. Badu has been charged with offensive conduct to breach the peace.

The MP aspirant was due for court last week Wednesday but the case had to be rescheduled to enable him attend the vetting.

Commander Baman told Graphiconline that four people attacked the MCE, however Badu Kaakyire insisted they were only two.

The regional secretary of the NPP, Sam Pyne, said Kaakyire’s vetting could not be flawed if he is convicted but “as it stands now, he is eligible to contest any election.”

A new court date is yet to be announced.
