Former President J. A Kufuor has been selected to lead the African Union (AU) observer team to the South African elections scheduled for May 7, 2014. He is expected in Johannesburg on May 6, 2014, a day ahead of the polls.
He told the Daily Graphic in Accra Thursday that he would leave Accra Saturday, May 3, 2014, for Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for a conference on climate change on May 4 and 5, to be addressed by the UN Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-Moon.
Former President Kufuor said after the elections, he would stay in South Africa for three more days to oversee the outcome of the polls and present a preliminary report to the AU.
He is expected back home on May 10, 2014.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Election 2016 has been appointed chair of the Commonwealth observer mission also for the South African elections.
Asked to comment on the selection of two statesmen from Ghana to lead two notable organisations to observe the South African polls, former President Kufuor said it was only an acknowledgement of Ghana’s democratic credentials and called on Ghanaians to leverage this goodwill for the advancement of the country.
