The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has presented assorted educational materials worth GH¢500,000 to 1,000 prospective first-year Senior High School (SHS) students from his constituency to ease parents’ burden.
The MP also honoured five of the students who excelled in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The overall BECE candidate, Benjamin Sakyi Koranteng of Oda Old Road Experimental School, was presented with GH¢2,000 as his prize, while four other candidates, two each from public and private Junior High Schools (JHS), had GH¢1,500 each.
The ceremony attracted many dignitaries such as the Birim Central Municipal Director of Education, Mrs Gloria Aggrey Kilson, the West Akyem Presbytery Chairperson of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Charles Baah Ankrah, the Bishop Elect of the Oda Methodist Diocese, Very Rev. Kingsley Sarfo Kwarteng, and the Oda Zongo Chief, Alhaji Sulemana Adamu.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Acquah commended parents of the students for their sacrifices that ensured the success of their wards in the BECE.
He stressed that his donation of mathematical sets and the organisation of mock examinations were a contributory factor towards the children’s success at the BECE.
Mr Acquah stated that the items were purchased locally to boost the local economy.
He supported the call by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference for a review of the SHS placement system to eliminate the problems that characterised this year’s selection.
The Municipal Director of Education, Mrs Aggrey Kilson, was full of praise for Mr Acquah for his commitment to education development in the municipality.
She advised parents not only to provide their wards with educational needs, but also to pay regular visits to them at school to monitor their academic progress.
The head pastor of the ICGC, Rev. Michael Appiah, who chaired the function, advised the fresh students to maximise their output to justify the investment made in them by the MO and their parents.
