The Base Movement Ghana (TBM) has thrown its weight behind former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, for the 2028 general election, while announcing the completion of structures aimed at expanding its political activities nationwide.
The organisation’s founder, Dr George Oti Bonsu, stated this at a press conference in Accra last Sunday, saying the movement was preparing a platform for supporters of Mr Agyapong, whom he described as the group's preferred presidential candidate.
He added that the movement was created to support Mr Agyapong following the NPP presidential primary and urged his supporters across the country to join the organisation.
“We are fully aware that thousands of hidden political allies across the length and breadth of the country are simply waiting for him to declare his formal acceptance of the Base Movement so they can firm up their decisions,” he said.
Criticism
For his part, the movement’s Chief Operations Coordinator, Jacob Osei Yeboah, criticised the NPP’s handling of Mr Agyapong’s presidential ambitions, alleging that the party failed to adequately support his grassroots appeal.
He claimed that Mr Agyapong’s performance in the party’s presidential primary was affected by weak structures among some of his supporters.
“Most of Kennedy Agyapong’s massive supporter base across Ghana is simply waiting for him to declare his formal acceptance of the Base Movement so they can firm up their decisions,” he said.
He further alleged that the party establishment had undermined Mr Agyapong’s political influence and failed to give him fair treatment.
He said the organisation would continue to build its structures around what he described as patriotism, honesty and discipline as it prepared for future elections.
Structures for 2028
Mr Osei Yeboah said the movement had established five national committees as part of efforts to strengthen its operations.
The committees are the Operational and Organising, Media and Communications, Finance and Fundraising, Research and Policy and Discipline, Reconciliation, Welfare and Appointment.
He said the committees would coordinate the movement’s activities and ensure broader participation among members.
Mr Osei Yeboah also announced that the movement had completed a digital membership platform to support registration and engagement down to the polling station level.
He said the platform would help the movement build a national database and engage key sectors of society, including traditional leaders, religious groups, youth, pensioners, persons with disabilities, traders, industrial leaders and professionals.
