21-Member task force for Greater Accra to supervise elections and referendum

A 21-member Greater Accra Regional election security task force has been inaugurated to ensure the overall security of the 2019 district-level elections and referendum on December 17, 2019.

The members of the task force were drawn from heads of regional security services and the Electoral Commission.

It is chaired by the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Frederick Adu Anim.

The committee is to secure and safeguard the transportation and storage of ballot materials at police stations and ensure peace at polling stations on the day of the election.

After the inauguration of the task force, Mr Adu Anim said the success of the elections hinged on effective security during and after the conduct of the elections.

In line with procedure and practice, he said, security agencies had been mandated to provide the required security before, during and after the elections.

Role 

Mr Adu Anim said the task force was also to see to the amicable settlement of minor complaints and ensure the arrest and prosecution of election offenders.

Additionally, he said, they were to identify inaccessible areas for advance planning to secure vehicles and other means of transporting election officials and materials to those areas. 

In a remark after inaugurating the task force, the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mrs Elizabeth Sackey, urged the members of the task force to ensure peace and security during the election period.

She assured the task force of the support of the regional coordinating council to ensure that they succeeded in their assignment.
