It would also help develop ideas that would promote the socio-economic development of the local community.

The zonal council members included five assembly members and five unit committee members.

The ceremony was attended by some members of the assembly, Members of Parliament and His Lordship, Justice Francis Obiri Yeboah of the Accra Circuit Court who swore the council into office.

Inaugurating the council, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga Central Municipal Assembly, Mr Aristo Aryee, said the inauguration of the council was a major milestone in Ghana’s continued search for true and enduring democracy and good and participatory governance in the country.

He also said the inauguration of the council was a way of giving majority of  people an opportunity to participate effectively in the decision-making processes.

Mr Aryee said the council would offer the communities an opportunity to express their developmental hopes and aspirations, since decisions would no longer be taken from a remote central point and imposed on the people.

He entreated the assembly to give their maximum support and encouragement to the new council and unit committee, since they were now part of the district/municipal assemblies and the central government.

Mr Aryee encouraged the council to devote it’s time to address issues and concerns relating to self-help development and revenue collection in the district.

He urged the council to work with discipline and respect and be law-abiding to prevent conflicts, tension and insecurity in the municipality.

Zonal Council Office

Mr Aryee commended the Charbukwei family for the allocation of an office space for the zonal council.

He said the office would have an environmental health department, a revenue collection office, an informal education department, among others, after its completion.
