A 29-year-old Chief Executive Officer of Univams Global Limited based in Agona Swedru, Mr Derrick Mbir, has been elected as the Gomoa Central Constituency Chairman of the
National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region during their constituency election.
The young entrepreneur, whose outfit is into courier services and also the sole distributor of Omatek brand of computers in the Central Region, polled 113 votes to defeat the
incumbent chairman, Mr Isaac Kwamena Williams, who had 94 votes and Gibrine Idan who had only 20 votes.
It was the first election to be organised by the party after the constituency was carved out of the then Gomoa East constituency in 2012.
All the immediate past executive were appointed into office in 2012 since the party could not organise a constituency election to elect new executive to head the constituency due to
the closeness of the 2012 general election.
The Vice-Chairman position was a contest between Mr Rockson Onomah and Mr Kofi Afful after Madam Joyce Acquah stepped down before voting. At the end of the voting, Mr Kofi
Afful secured 118 votes to beat Mr Rockson Onomah who managed 109 votes.
Mr Moses Jehu Appiah polled 139 votes to defeat the incumbent secretary, Mr Charles Acquah who had only 81 votes. Mr Michael P. Botwey got 106 votes and lost the deputy
secretary position to Mr Emmanuel K. Essuman who had 123 votes.
For the organiser position, Mr John Kobena Gyesi polled 152 votes to win the position as against 74 votes secured by Delali Amedza. Emmanuel Akomprah had 123 votes to win the
deputy organiser position against Seth Annan who had 104 votes.
Mr Emmanuel Akyer won the propaganda secretary position by a narrow margin after polling 115 votes against his opponent, Mr Ibrahim Obeng who had 113 votes. Nana K. Ehuren
was elected constituency deputy propaganda secretary with 127 votes against 101 votes secured by Emmanuel Doobi.
The constituency youth organiser position went to James Aboagye who had 37 votes to defeat Yakubu Saeed who polled only 18 votes whiles Ali Haruna Alaligi was also elected
deputy youth organiser with 35 votes against 20 votes secured by Maxwell Owusu Zok.
Miss Alice Mensah had 38 votes to win the women’s organiser position against 14 votes polled by Vida Asamoah Koomson. Madam Dorcas Acquah also polled 34 votes to be elected
as the deputy women’s organiser as against 20 votes polled by Miss Vida Acquaah.
Mr Godfred Luubridge Koomson and Salamat ketu were elected treasurer and deputy treasurer respectively.
Chairman’s address
Mr Derrick Mbir in his victory speech expressed gratitude to the delegates for giving him the opportunity to serve and contribute his quota towards the progress of the party in the
constituency.
He said the new executive would operate an open and transparent administration as well as bring everybody on board to play active roles in the politics of the party.
He called on members of the party to do away with the camps that existed before the election and work with a sense of unity towards winning both the parliamentary and presidential
elections in 2016.
Member of Parliament
The Member of Parliament for the Gomoa Central constituency, Mrs Rachel Florence Appoh Opoku, thanked the delegates and the candidates for conducting themselves well
before, during and after the election.
She called on members of the party to work effectively towards the 2016 election since the battle ahead of them was a Herculean one.
She appealed to the party supporters to stay united and work towards enhancing the fortunes of the party in the constituency.
Present at the election were Mr Isaac Kingsley Ahunu-Armah, the Gomoa East District Chief Executive,Mr Ekow Panyin Okyere, Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Mr Kofi
Mintah, a founder member of the party in the Central Region who swore in the new executive and other regional executive of the party.
