Arise Ghana led 2-day demo against E-levy, fuel price hikes, other ills hits Accra June 28 and 29

A two-day demonstration to protest among other things, fuel price hikes, the imposition of E-Levy, the grabbing of State lands by state officials, and increased police brutalities, has been slated for June 28 and 29 in Accra.

The demonstration organised by Arise Ghana, will also demand for a full scale and bi-partisan parliamentary probe into COVID-19 expenditures, and the total cancelation of government’s proposed “Agyapa” deal.

A statement issued by leading conveners of the demonstration says arrangements have been agreed with the police for the two-day demonstration, including the picketing of the frontage of Jubilee House, the seat of government until 10pm on day one of the demonstration.

The picketing of the Jubilee House had previously been a bone of contention between the organisers and the police, with the latter saying the area was a security zone and therefore a no-go area for the demonstrators.

But the organisers say the agreed plan is that demonstrators will converge at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange/ Obra Spot between 12pm and 3pm on June 28, and proceed through the Nima Police Station street to the Arko Adjei inter-change and end at the frontage of the Jubilee House where they would picket until 10pm.

Arise Ghana said the country is in deep crises and urgently requires a rescue, and called on “all progressive forces and patriotic Ghanaians to come out in their numbers for this historic demonstration which will mark the beginning of a new paradigm in the destiny of this country,” according to the statement signed by Comrades Bobie Ansah, Benard Mornah and Mensah Thompson.

Below is the full statement.

ARISE GHANA CONCLUDES MODALITIES WITH POLICE OVER JUNE 28 DEMO.

The leadership of ARISE-GHANA has finalized its official engagements with the Ghana Police Service over our impending demonstration.

Pursuant to fruitful deliberations with the Police, the following details and modalities have been agreed on for the demonstration.

1. The demonstration will be held on 28th and 29th June, 2022.

2. The first day, 28th June, 2022 of the demonstration will begin at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange/ Obra Spot where we shall converge between the hours of 12PM and 3PM. We shall move through the Nima Police Station street to the Arko-Agyei inter-change and end at the Frontage of the Jubilee House where we will picket until 10PM.

3. On the second day, 29th of June 2022, we shall converge at the El-wak sports stadium at 12PM and move through the Land Commission road and the Liberation road to the Ministry of Finance, where a petition would be presented to the Minister for Finance. From the Ministry of Finance, we shall move to the frontage of the Parliament House of Ghana where we shall present a petition to the Speaker.

The purpose of this Arise Ghana demonstration is to:

I) protest against persistent and astronomical hikes in fuel prices by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government that has imposed excruciating economic hardships on Ghanaians.

II) protest against the imposition of the obnoxious E-Levy on the already-burdened Ghanaian people by the insensitive Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government,

III) demand a full scale and bi-partisan parliamentary probe into COVID-19 expenditures.

IV) protest against the grabbing of State lands by officials of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government, particularly the de-classification of huge portions of the Achimota Forest reserve.

V) protest against the increased rate of police brutalities and state-sponsored killing of innocent Ghanaians, as well as the growing culture of human rights abuses under the watch of President Akufo-Addo and Alhaji Bawumia.

VI) demand the total cancelation of the fraudulent “Agyapa” deal.

There is no gainsaying the fact that our beloved country is in deep crises and urgently requires a rescue. We therefore wish to call on all progressive forces and patriotic Ghanaians to come out in their numbers for this historic demonstration which will mark the beginning of a new paradigm in the destiny of this country. Let us ARISE and SAVE GHANA NOW!.
