New surgical block for Children’s Hospital

The project for the surgical block was initiated by Rev Father Campbell, known as a passionate friend of the unprivileged and needy.

The Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital is a healthcare institution that provides medical care and child health, family planning and nutrition services.

It was built in 1926 by Sir Gordon Guggisburg, then Governor of the Gold Coast, and was named after Princess Marie Louise, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria because she laid the foundation stone.

 Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Rev Father Campbell,  who is also the Chairman of the Board of the hospital, said he dreamt of the theatre block five years ago, for which he took various initiatives to raise funds from individuals, companies and institutions for the project.

Companies which provided various forms of assistance were Tullow Ghana Limited, Kosmos Energy Ghana, the Ghana National Petroleum Company, Anadarko WCTP Company and Sabre Oil.

They contributed about $2 million towards the purchase of equipment for the block.

Rev Father Campbell said although the new block had been completed, there was the need to expand the hospital, so that it could accommodate more children, and appealed to the public, the government and organisations in that regard.

A veteran diplomat, Mr K.B. Asante, who inaugurated the new block, thanked the Catholic Church and all benefactors who supported the project.

The Medical Superintendent of the Children’s Hospital, Dr Eric Sifah, expressed delight at the completion of the new project, saying the new  block had provided the needed environment and facilities towards healthcare delivery.

He appealed to the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health to provide the hospital with more doctors, especially in the area of paediatric surgeons, anaesthetics, among other medical officers.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Mr Robert Mettle-Nunoo, also thanked Father Campbell, the Jubilee Partners and the benefactors for their good work towards the development of the nation.
