They were screened for eye, ear, nose and throat infections, as well as general ailments, during the two-day exercise.

Beneficiary schools included the All Saints Anglican, the Accra Girls’ Senior High and the Accra New Town Experimental “1” Junior High School.

Others were the Boundary Road Basic School, the Rev Ernest Bruce Memorial School and the Kinbu Senior High.

Minister of Health

Speaking to the media after the health screening, the Minister for Health, Ms Sherry Ayitey, said the government was mandated to ensure that all Ghanaians had access to quality health care, hence the exercise.

“Some of the children had eye and ear problems and had it not been for this exercise, their parents would not have known that the children had such problems, so it is very important,” she stated.

She said the results of the medical screening would be sent to the various schools so that parents and guardians could send their children and wards who needed further treatment to health facilities.

Ms Ayitey said the programme would be extended to all the 10 regions next year to educate the public on the need fop all to know their health status.

The head of the outreach programme, Dr Constance Addy-Yoho, the Chief Dental Officer of the Ministry of Health, said the programme was the first of its kind and expressed the hope that the ministry would be able to reach out to people in all parts of the country.

She explained that it was necessary to inculcate in children the importance of making informed choices about their health.
