The Upper West Regional Police Command has intercepted 50,000 rounds of ammunition being transported along an unapproved route outside Wa and arrested three suspects in connection with the consignment.
The interception took place on Monday, June 29, 2026, when police stopped a commercial vehicle suspected of transporting the ammunition.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 200 boxes of AA cartridges, equivalent to 50,000 rounds, concealed beneath other goods.
The suspects were identified as Alhassan Issahaku, Idrissu Mashood and Alhaji Issahaku.
They are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
The Regional Police Command said investigations were ongoing to establish the source of the ammunition and arrest any other persons linked to its transportation.
In a statement issued on July 1, 2026, the Command praised the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and integrity.
The statement said the Police remained focused on protecting lives and property, preventing crime and maintaining peace and security in the Upper West Region.
It also appealed to members of the public to continue supporting the Police by providing timely and credible information to aid efforts to combat crime and keep communities safe.
