Zoomlion disinfests Atwima Kwanwoma

Zoomlion has begun a disinfestation exercise in some communities in the Atwima Kwanwoma District in the Ashanti Region.

The exercise is to keep the area clean and to check the occurrence of preventable diseases like malaria and cholera.

Communities where the exercise has so far taken place are Ahenema Kokoben, Pakyi, Kotwi, Brofoyedru and Adumasa. Their refuse container sites were sprayed.

Besides, specific spots where the spraying had taken place in the communities include public toilets, refuse dumps and final disposal sites.

The Ashanti Regional Vector Control Officer  of Zoomlion, Mr Roy Gyimah-Buadi, who briefed the Daily Graphic about the programme, said it was targeted  at preventing disease- causing vectors from increasing in population.

“Attacking the vectors means preventing malaria, cholera and other related diseases,” he said.

He said the exercise, which is being extended to hitherto neglected areas, was under the support of the district’s environmental health unit.

Stressing  the need to intensify Zoomlion’s sanitation exercise in communities outside Kumasi, the officer explained that many of the rural communities lacked proper sanitation, which exposes them to diseases.

He said the company was also clearing choked gutters to prevent the collection of water and its attendant breeding of mosquitoes.

Mr Gyimah-Buadi said they had cleared an age-old mountainous refuse site at Pakyi and would place containers at the site to prevent people from dumping of refuse indiscrimately.

Mr Gyimah-Buadi called on residents to use designated container sites of Zoomlion within their communities instead of dumping solid waste anyhow.
