The late king of Dagbon, Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani II and some members of his royal court were killed by some unknown assailants on March 27, 2002 and 16 years after that incident the perpetrators are yet to be found.

At a solemn occasion held in Tamale Tuesday, March 27, 2018 to mark the anniversary, the Andani royal family in a statement read on their behalf by, the Moglaa-Lana, William Iddrisu Andani, they said the failure by the government to deliver justice where justice was due has helped in promoting a culture of violence and impunity in Dagbon.

They added that the inability to apprehend and punish the perpetrators of the heinous crime of March 27, 2002, has sent the signal that crime pays and this has emboldened the criminal elements to continue on that same destructive trial which has led Dagbon to the present crisis.

The event was initially planned to take place at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, the traditional seat of the Dagbon Kingdom but it was shifted to Tamale, for security reasons.

Some military personnel were deployed to beef up security in Yendi on Sunday March 25, 2018 following threats by a group of youth said to belong to the Abudu royal family to forcibly occupy the old Gbewaa palace, the seat of the overlord of Dagbon.
