About 3,000 people drawn from the various keep fit clubs in Accra, corporate bodies, churches and non-governmental organisations converged on the El-Wak Sports Stadium at 6:30 a.m. to embark on the 15-kilometre walk.

Walking routes

From the El-Wak Stadium, they walked through Pig Farm, Accra New Town, Nima and back to the stadium in a space of two hours and six minutes.

The event was on the theme: “Ensuring peaceful elections through keep fit activities: My Role, your Role, our Role”.

While congratulating the participants on turning up in their numbers for the event, the Vice-President said that was an indication of how united Ghanaians were towards ensuring peaceful elections and expressed the hope that the electorate would, in the same spirit, unite during the electioneering.

He asked the participants to use the occasion to preach peace and unity in their various communities ahead of the polls and expressed optimism that the country would come out of the elections stronger.

He underscored the need for the citizenry to engage in regular exercises to maintain a healthy nation.

Among the dignitaries who participated in the walk were the Youth and Sports Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye; the Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, and some top military officers.

Role to play

The Chairman of the El-Wak Keep Fit Club, Mr Abdul Karim-Hatsu, had earlier, in his address to the participants, said everyone had a role to play in ensuring that the elections would be peaceful.

He said the theme for the walk was a demonstration of how the various keep fit clubs had committed themselves to play their part in ensuring peaceful elections.

The event was supported by Queiroz Galvao Constructions Limited and Max International.
