Nuhu Somalia, 45, and Abubakar Iddrisu, 38, were arrested at Jindabuo in the Northern Region, while Aweisu Aja, 45, was arrested at Sawaba in the Upper West Region.

Three others, Alhaji Abubakari Salaam (aka Thousand), Alhaji Ibrahim Adam (aka Broni) and Alhaji Abdul Razak Malik, mentioned as the sources of those drugs on the retail market, are also assisting in investigations.

Unregistered drugs

According to Mr Michael Anim Ameyaw, the Upper West Regional Manager of the Pharmacy Council, the swoops were occasioned by a programme to rid the system of expired drugs and to prevent persons from operating the drug dispensing business without the required authorisation.

He told the Daily Graphic that some of the seized drugs were unregistered products which should, therefore, not be sold in the country.

Mr Ameyaw explained that regulations governing the sale of drugs required proper licensing before any company or individual could operate the business.

Regulation flouted

He noted that the requirement had been side-stepped by many, particularly retailers in the remote parts of the Upper West Region, and, thereby endangering the lives of unsuspecting clients.

Mr Ameyaw said the operation, programmed to last a month, would seek to weed out persons and businesses operating illegally.
