Three Ghanaians awarded Chevening scholarships

The £80,000-scholarship will cover tuition, departure and arrival allowance, warm clothing and other expenses of the beneficiaries for the 2013/2014 academic year.

A Senior Operations Officer at Fidelity Bank Ghana Limited, Mrs Barbara Ackonor; Mr Patrick Lamptey of the Ghana Meteorological Agency and Dr Frank Amaning, a specialist psychiatrist of the Ghana Health Service, are the beneficiaries of this year’s Chevening scholarships, one of the world’s most prestigious schemes.

While Mrs Ackonor will pursue a Master of Science in Finance and Economics at the Durham University, Mr Lamptey will pursue a master’s degree in Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing at the Aberystwyth University, with Dr Amaning going for a Master of Science in Mental Health Service and Population Research at the Institute of Psychiatry at the King’s College in London.

Presenting this year’s package to the beneficiaries at the British High Commission in Accra on Monday, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Peter Jones, said more than 1,000 scholars from various countries had benefited from the scheme since its inception in 1984.

He urged the beneficiaries to return to Ghana and help in its development upon completion of their respective programmes.

A deputy minister of Education, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, lauded the British Government for the initiative to institute such a scheme.

He advised the recipients to take cognisance of the duties imposed on them by studying hard to justify themselves in the UK educational system which he described as the best in the world.
