Students tour Ghana Post

As part of celebrations to mark this year’s World Post Day, the Ghana Post has organised a sensitisation tour of the company’s facilities for some schoolchildren.

The tour was to educate the children on the importance of the postal system and to encourage them to write a lot more letters than they were doing now to sharpen their English Language skills.

Schools that embarked on the tour included Save Our Soul (SOS) Hermann Gmiener School, Tema, Bishop Girls Basic School, High Street, and the Private Odartey Lamptey ‘1’ JHS at Makola in Accra.

The World Post Day falls on October 9 every year.

In an interview with the Junior Graphic, the General Manager for Corporate Services, Ghana Post, Mrs Elizabeth Acquah, stressed the need for young people to be encouraged to go back to the art of letter writing to help improve on their writing and spelling skills.

She said the overdependence on technology was contributing negatively to the standard of the English Language, particularly with students.

She stressed the need for students to write more by exchanging letters with one another “in order to improve on their writing abilities and learn new words.’’

During the tour, students were taken to the main counter services, the philatelic sales counter and the mail room where they were taught the processes letters go through before reaching their recipients.

Kwela Abanga, a Form Two student of the Private Odartey Lamptey ‘1’ JHS, told the Junior Graphic that he was going to start writing letters once again by looking out for pen pals.

“From now onwards, I will start writing to my pen pals across the world and also tell my peers to write more, since it will help us improve on our writing skills and vocabularies,” he said.
