Police team to investigate death of illegal miners at Kwabeng

A team of homicide detectives from the Police Criminal Investigations Department have been dispatched to conduct further investigations into the death of four illegal miners at Akukuaso, near Akyem Kwabeng in the Eastern Region at the weekend.

The team is expected to work together with local police to uncover the circumstances which led to the death of the four men.

A statement signed by the Director General of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police, ACP David Eklu said preliminary investigation shows that the deceased were conveying an excavator on a pay loader from Anyinam to Extra Gold Mining Concession at Akukuaso.

It said in the course of their journey, they abandoned the pay loader for reasons yet to be ascertained.

Their bodies were later found by Police with the assistance of the community, in a pit filled with water by the roadside, which is about five metres away from the point where they abandoned the pay loader

The statement added that the police administration was also working with stakeholders; particularly the community and families of the deceased in conducting the investigations.

Meanwhile, the anti-galamsey taskforce, Operation Vanguard, has denied killing the four illegal miners.
