The sponsorship, estimated between 5,000 and 6,000 euros, will cater for the airfare, accommodation and feeding fees of the beneficiaries for their six-month stay.

Under the initiative, the beneficiaries, who are to be selected by the Chief Justice and Judicial Service, will learn international business laws under the mentorship of some of the finest Italian lawyers.

Relationship

The Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Milan, Professor Nerina Boschiero, announced this when she led a three-member delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Chief Justice, Mr Georgina T. Wood, in Accra.

The delegation was in the country to enhance co-operation between the University of Milan and the Judiciary Service.

The Italians also discussed ways of establishing collaborative research exchange programmes between the Italian university and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Exchange programme

Prof. Boschiero said a framework agreement between the Faculty of Law of the University of Milan and the GIMPA had been developed.

“We have developed the first Masters of Law (LLM) in sustainable development which is a two-year programme,” she stated.

She said students who completed such programmes would be empowered to work in all European countries, adding that: “We hope to extend similar opportunities to Ghanaian students.”

“Our aim is to offer such programmes to outstanding students in Italy to promote gender equality and we strongly believe the two Ghanaian female lawyers will be able to work with renowned law firms in Italy,” the dean added.

Competence

Prof. Boschiero, who is also the President of the Women Lawyers in Italy, was optimistic that the two Ghanaian beneficiaries would be much empowered to come back home and start their own law firms and provide services to international clients.

Professor Paolo Galizzi of the Fordham Law School in the United States of America said the collaboration between the University of Milan and the Judicial Service would also help develop confident women lawyers who would be able to competently handle cases of international business transactions in Ghana.

“We are here to help produce competent women lawyers for the future and we hope similar opportunities will be opened to other people in the future,” he said.

Assurance

The Chief Justice assured the delegation that her outfit and members of the Judicial Service would ensure that only qualified persons were chosen to benefit from the internship project.
