Rainstorm destroys property, displaces hundreds

Three students, including two girls, of the Gushiegu Senior High School who sustained injuries are responding to treatment at the Gushiegu Hospital.

The Gushiegu District Chief Executive, Alhaji Alhassan Fuseini, told the Daily Graphic that he feared that if “help does not come immediately, students and pupils whose schools were affected are likely not to attend classes for some time”.

According to him, the rains started about 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and for some hours people were held up in their rooms, while others ran from place to place for cover.

He said apart from the ballot boxes at the EC’s office, all other items, including computers, were destroyed in the rain.

 Alhaji Fuseini added that about 24 laptops meant for distribution to junior high school students in the district were also destroyed.

The chief executive said in all, eight schools, including the SHS and JHSs, were affected. Other infrastructure damaged in the process was offices and homes.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is yet to respond to the plight of the victims, some of whom are putting up with friends and relatives.

Alhaji Fuseini, therefore, appealed to philanthropists and public spirited organisations “to come to our aid as we wait for response from NADMO and the central government”.
