President John Dramani Mahama last Saturday cut the sod for the Streets of Accra Project, which will ensure that there is an asphalt overlay on 76 kilometres of roads in the national capital.
Describing it as "an ambitious and life-changing project," the President said the asphalt would end the age-old patching of potholes and remedial works on the roads in the sprawling city.
The asphalt roads will have lifespan of about 15 years.
Beneficiary communities
Communities to benefit from the project, which is being financed with a loan from the Brazilian Government, are Korle Wokon, Bukom, Mantse Agboona, James Town, Korle Gonno, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Dansoman, Lartebiokoshie and Town Council Line.
The rest are Sabon Zongo, Kanda, Haatso, Dome, Agbooba, Madina and Adenta.
"This project will not only change the environment of the beneficiary communities,but it will also prolong the lifespan of our roads. It will reduce the amount of money we've been spending on maintanence and reduce travel time and improve the quality of driving on the roads," the President said at the sod-cutting ceremony at Odododiodoo.
Ongoing works
President Mahama said work was already being undertaken on portions of the La Beach Road, Labone, Cantonments, Pig Farm, Ring Road, Nima, Adabraka and Agbobloshie, among others.
The project, which is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year, would be replicated in the other regional capitals and some district capitals.
Already, some work is ongoing in Sekondi-Takoradi.
President Mahama further said he would soon cut the sod for a similar project in Tema, which would benefit Ningo Prampram, Kpong Katamanso, Tema, Ashaiman, Teshie, Nungua and parts of La.
Advice
He advised the public to tolerate the inconveniences that might arise during the execution of the project.
He also asked them to desist from acts that would destroy the quality of the roads after their construction.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, said the government’s resolve to change the face of road infrastructure in the country was on course.
The Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Nii Lante Vanderpuiye, said the residents would forever be grateful to the President for the many projects he had brought to the community, adding that the people would reciprocate it with massive votes for the NDC in the November 7 polls.
