NRSA launches 2019 road safety campaign

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has on Monday, November 11, 2019 released a statement consigning its best wishes to all roads users and families who had lost their relatives through road traffic accident as well as individuals who are injured through road clashes.

The (NRSA) indicated that provisional statistics from January to September this year shows that even though there has been a 6.0 % and 2.25% increase in the number of crashes and injuries respectively, there has been about 7.6% reduction in persons killed through road traffic and a 17.4% reduction in pedestrian knocked down over the same period in 2018.

NRSA said while the collective contributions of stakeholders are acknowledged, road users are also challenged to renew their pledges to be more discipline for a crash-free yuletide.

In a bid to raise awareness for the season, the (NRSA) says it will act under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and in collaboration with DVLA, MTTD, Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and all stakeholders, to officially launch the 2019 Road Safety Christmas Campaign on Thursday 14th November, 2019 under the theme, “Stop Road Accidents Now, Before it Stops You.

The launch was scheduled to be held at the Takoradi Station in Kaneshie, Accra at 9:00am.

It is the expectation of the NRSA that all road users practice safe road use in traffic: Drivers to be responsible, Pedestrians to cross the road at designated safe crossing points, Passengers to wear Seatbelts and Speak up against all forms of driver misbehavior that endangers their lives before, during and after the festive season.

Also, Motorcyclist and Tricyclists are encouraged to wear their helmets and avoid unsafe operational practices while transport organisations and institutions observe internal controls systems which make crashes unattractive.
