New 470mw Karpowership arrives in Ghana
A new 470 megawatts (MW) capacity power ship, twice the size of the current Karpower barge has arrived in Ghana.

Named as Karadeniz Powership Osman Khan, the Powership will start operating in the Tema fishing Harbor in September 2017.
The arrival of the ship is in consonance with the Power Purchase Agreement signed with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that requires Karpowership Ghana Company Limited to provide a total of 450MW capacity and directly feed it into the national grid for 10 years.
With the arrival of the 470 capacity megawatts ship, the current 225 megawatts barge will work simultaneously alongside the new one for about a month when the ship is well stabilised before the 225MW is decommissioned and moved out of Ghana.
A statement issued by Karpowership Ghana Company Limited said the Karadeniz Powership Osman Khan is the world's biggest powership and that it is self-propelled with minimum noise vibration and is the 13th Karpowership in operation world wide.
Twenty more of its kind are under construction, the statement said.
Karpowership began operations in Ghana in 2015 with the current 225MW barged named Karadeniz Aysegul Sultan.
It said Karpowership has a proven track record of supplying sustainable, reliable and affordable electricity with its operational 235 MW barge, which is moored in Tema Fishing Harbor.
The 470 MW Powership will supply uninterrupted and reliable electricity at one of the lowest cost to Ghana for thermal power generation with its dual fuel engines and combined cycle power generation technology, the statement said.
It said the Powership will initially use low Sulphur Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) to generate electricity but the fuel will be converted to Natural Gas as soon as local Natural Gas supplies become available, ensuring cost savings for Ghana.
It said the operations of 470 MW Karadeniz Powership Osman Khan will have a significant contribution to Ghana’s electricity supply as the most reliable power plant in the country and create more employment opportunities.
