The programme was organised by LGS in collaboration with the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS).

Dubbed, “Continuous Professional Development Programme for Staff of the Service,” it aims at equipping new staff of the LGS with first-hand knowledge of the local government system.

Speaking at the opening ceremony in Accra yesterday, the Director of ILGS, Dr Esther Ofei-Aboagye, said it was necessary for them to fully understand the concepts, legislation, principles and processes of local government to enhance efficient delivery of service.

“The training will build the capacity of the participants to ensure effective service delivery in the districts, ” she said.

Dr Ofei-Aboagye also said the participants would be  required to produce individual project work on local government administration and its structure.

She said the participants would also be subjected to a two-week field training after the course and, therefore, advised them to learn hard.

Mode of participants’ selection

The Head of LGS, Dr Callistus Mahama, said the participants were selected from districts in all the 10 regions of the country with particular consideration for those from the deprived and remote areas.

He stressed the need for them to upgrade their knowledge in local government administration because of the continuous changes and advancement in the system of government, especially in the area of decentralisation.

“The knowledge of the staff has to be continuously updated to make them able to confront challenges as well as be well informed in certain issues that are crucial for their districts’ administration,” he said.

He added that the participants were accountable for their districts’ development and urged them to always strive to improve their knowledge and technical know-how since the world keeps changing.
