Let My Vote Count dares police, government

Pressure group, Let My Vote Count, says it will go ahead with its planned picketing at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC) on September 16, in spite of misgivings by the police.

The group says while the police had in an earlier meeting agreed routes for a public march from the Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle to the EC headquarters to back demands for a new voters register for the 2016 elections, the police has now made a U-turn not to allow the march any longer claiming the EC headquarters is a “security zone”.

The group says it suspects the government may have instructed the police to refuse the march, but says it will proceed with its planned picketing of the EC offices because it does not believe the EC is a “security zone”.

“We wish to serve public notice to the Police and government, which we know is behind this arbitrary move to frustrate our constitutional right to picket the EC, that we shall march to the EC and picket the EC as intended on 16th September, 2015.

“As far as we are concerned, the EC is not a security zone, like a place to manufacture weapons of mass destruction or for keeping sensitive national security materials. It is a body setup to conduct public elections in Ghana, and therefore answerable to the people of the public.”
