The 25-year-old wife, Beatrice Asamoah, popularly referred to in the area as Maabena was found dead in Kumi’s room on December 25, 2015 after neighbours allegedly overhead the two embroiled in a fight with the wife shouting for help.

Maabena who was a second hand cloth dealer was said to have been separated from Kumi for some months after he was said to have assaulted her continuously. They have a three-year-old daughter.

The Crime officer of the Kasoa District Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Naa Musa told Graphic Online that at about 4am on December 25, 2015 the police received a call from a neighbor that Kumi had locked up his wife and was beating her.

When the police responded to the call, they found the door locked and when it was forced open, Maabena was found dead in the room.

Mr Musa said the tongue of the deceased had protruded suggesting that she was strangled.

A search in the room and house showed that Kumi had packed his belongings and absconded without being noticed by the co-tenants.

Preliminary investigations carried out by the police, according to Mr Musa indicated that though the parents of the deceased had rented a room for the deceased at Kasoa CP following their separation, she had been going to Kumi's house at night.

Neighbours told the police Kumi had been assaulting Maabena and that some of the cases were reported to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVSSU) at Kasoa.
