Karaga NPP Chairmen, three others granted bail

A Tamale Circuit Court on Wednesday granted bail to the Karaga Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Tahiru Zakaria, and three others in the sum of GH¢5,000 each with two sureties to be justified.

The chairman and the three others were arraigned for rioting with offensive weapons and causing damage to a Yamaha motorbike.

The three other accused persons are Baba Ali Osman, Mohammed Alhassan and Abdulai Ziblim.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges.

They were granted bail to reappear before the court, presided over by Mr Justice William Twumasi Appiah, on November 15, 2017.

Facts

According to the prosecution, the Karaga NPP Constituency chairman last Monday, October 23, 2017, led some youth of the party to attack the District Youth Employment Agency (YEA) office at Karaga and locked up the office.

The youth did not, however, meet the District Coordinator of the YEA, who was then at the hospital; they, therefore, went there and seized a Yamaha motorbike belonging to him.

In the process of the attack, two members of the youth were arrested and sent to the police station.

The irate youth, who were angered by the arrest of the two of their colleagues, attacked the local police station at Karaga and freed them before setting ablaze the motorbike belonging to the YEA District Coordinator.

The chairman and three others were arrested last Friday and charged with the offence.
