The Kumasi Children’s Home has been under the management of the Department of Social Welfare ever since it was built in 1965.

Complementing govt efforts

At the presentation ceremony at the home in Kumasi, a representative of the chamber, Ms Monica Wei, said the donation was the chamber’s contribution towards the sustenance of the children in the home.

She said membership of the chamber comprised Chinese nationals, particularly from GuangXi Province of China, who have been working in Ghana for the past three years.

She stated that since the government alone could not provide adequately for all sectors of the economy, it was only fitting that organisations such as theirs would also provide some form of support where necessary.

“Under no circumstance should needy children in society, particularly those in organised homes, be deprived of support from society either in kind or in cash. It is in view of this that we at GuangXi Chamber of Commerce deem it necessary to offer our support to complement that of the Government of Ghana.

She called for close collaboration between the Home and the Chamber and pledged more support in the coming years.

She suggested that the Government of Ghana should develop child-centred policies that would take care of the needs of children, especially those in public orphanages.

Ms Wei said the gesture was also an expression of strengthening relations between Ghana and China.

She urged Ghanaians to consider Chinese nationals living in the country as friends and maintain cordial relations with them.

Gratitude

The Manager of the Kumasi Children’s Home, Madam Mabel Boamah, expressed her gratitude to the Chinese community for their act of kindness and appealed to the public to help the home overcome its challenges in order to create a bright future for the children under its care.
