Greater Accra Regional Minister tours Latex Foam

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Julius Debrah, has urged Ghanaians to patronise made-in-Ghana goods to create more employment in the country.

He said the government had created a fund to motivate more people to establish their own businesses.

He made the appeal when he went on a familiarisation tour of Latex Foam, manufacturers of mattresses, and GIHOC Distilleries, producers of alcoholic beverages, as part of  his campaign for Ghanaians to patronise made-in-Ghana goods.

The minister, who was accompanied by some officials of the Ministry of Trade, said it was part of the government's agenda to encourage Ghanaians to locally produce their own goods.

Mr Debrah said the tour of the two companies and some small-scale industries in the country was to reposition the Greater Accra Region to source some of the funds the government had created to assist indigenous companies.

He said the President’s comments about his shoes while delivering the State of the Nation Address was  to tell Ghanaians to patronise made-in-Ghana goods.

The regional minister said the country had been over-dependent on imports and the government wanted to assist the private sector.

The General Manager of Latex Foam, Mr Salem Nahlous, appealed to the government to ensure that most of the goods imported into the country would pass through the Ghana Standards Authority to check their quality.

He said they had made several complaints to the Ministry of Trade about the problem of importation of substandard goods but no action had been taken.

“We give more revenue to the government by paying more tax than what accrues from some of the goods imported,” he added.

He said local production was becoming more expensive, so there was the need for the  government to protect and enable them to expand to create more jobs for the youth.

Mr Nahlous also appealed to the government to rehabilitate the roads in the Kaneshie Industrial area.

“We all contributed in 1983 to construct roads in the area and they are now in a deplorable state,” he stated.
